History was made on Wednesday,1st of June, this year, when Ngozi Igweonu of Federal Government Girls College, Umuahia; became the winner of the maiden edition of the "Umuahia Whizzkid" Competition!
It was a memorable occasion, graced by members of IT C.D.S. Umuahia (the hosts), IT professionals, Educationists, and students.
A lecture was delivered by Mr.Kelechi Oriaku, an IT Security Expert. He spoke on the advancements of IT and its benefits to society. His lecture was preceded by encouraging remarks coming from Mr.A.A.Agwu, Chairman of the occasion and experienced educationist. Among the guests were Mr.John Aghara, the Coordinator of IT C.D.S. Umuahia; representatives of the Area and Zonal Inspectors of N.Y.S.C. - Umuahia-North; and A.S.U.B.E.B.
The competition proper was splendid! It was arguably the first ever time that a quiz competition for secondary schools in the city was fully computerized! The moderator was Michael Monday-Ariyo, the chairman of the organizing committee. Three schools were ably represented by two contestants and several supporters each. They were: Federal Govt.Girls College, St.Tina`s School, and Girls Senior Secondary School.
At the end of an exciting three-round contest with questions on Mathematics, Current Affairs, and Computing; Federal Govt.Girls College came tops with their representatives giving correct answers to all 12 questions!
Next was the "Whizzkid Round" having the two contestants of the top school going head-to-head! After a forty-five minute thriller during which the two contestants kept answering individual questions on computing correctly, a winner finally emerged in the person of Ngozi Igweonu! The runner-up(Grace by name), had given her a good fight for the prize:a certificate/award and a U.P.S. system. There were consolation prizes, and certificates for participating schools.
IT C.D.S. outgoing president Bello A.Segun, gave the vote of thanks, thanking the group for staging the event in the midst of lapses in the areas of sponsorship and accommodation. He urged the members of the C.D.S. to make improvements when staging the competition, come next year.
The competition was wound-up with a glamorous photo session outside the 2nd hall of the Umuahia-North Local Govt. Secretariat, a make-shift venue for the competition!
